Local Council Meetings
Engaging government on all levels to promote fact based drug policy and remove arrest and coercion from the treatment of people with substance use disorders.
Assembly Bill 4461 sponsored by Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri-Huttle and Assemblyman Daniel Benson would remove pejorative language referring to health issues and disabilities in our state's statutes. This bill passed the Assembly Human Services Committee. Randy Thompson testified, representing Help Not Handcuffs, in support of the legislation. Specific to substance use, the bill would remove terms like "Drug Addict" and "Drug Abuser" and replace them with respectful and humane terms, specifically "Person with a Substance Use Disorder."
